Dietitian in Indore: Healthy Eating in India's Street Food Capital

Indore: India's Cleanest City Has a Food Problem

Indore has won the Swachh Survekshan award for 7 consecutive years — making it India's cleanest city. It has also won an unofficial title: India's street food capital. Chappan Dukan, Sarafa Bazaar, Chhappan Bhog — Indore's food scene is legendary. Poha-jalebi for breakfast, garadu chaat in evenings, shrikhand and rabdi after dinner — Indore loves food like no other city. This creates a unique challenge for health-conscious Indoreans: how do you stay healthy when you live in the most delicious food destination in India? I have worked with clients from Vijay Nagar, Scheme 54, and AB Road, and I have the answer.

The Indore Food Profile

Poha-Jalebi breakfast: Indore's iconic breakfast is actually not terrible nutritionally — poha is a whole grain, light and easy to digest. The problem is the jalebi — deep-fried sugar syrup. This combination spikes blood sugar dramatically first thing in the morning. Garadu chaat: Yam (suran) fried in masala — actually quite nutritious apart from the frying. The chaat masala, lemon, and spices are gut-friendly. Sabudana khichdi: Commonly eaten during fasts — pure starch, very high glycemic index. Fine for a religious fast, problematic as a health food. Bhutte ka kees: Grated corn cooked with ghee and spices — high in natural sugars and glycemic index.

Health Issues Most Common in Indore

Obesity: Indore's food culture is so rich that obesity is becoming a serious issue, particularly in the 25-45 age group. Diabetes: High carbohydrate diet from an early age creates insulin resistance. Indore's sweet-heavy culture accelerates this. PCOS in young women: Growing significantly in Indore's young female population — working women and college students particularly affected. Fatty liver: High fried food consumption and increasingly sedentary jobs creating fatty liver at young ages.

The Indore Healthy Eating Strategy

Poha modification: Skip or minimize the jalebi. Add more vegetables to poha — peas, carrots, capsicum. Pair with dahi instead. Chappan Dukan strategy: When visiting, choose 1-2 items mindfully instead of sampling everything. Eat slowly. Never go hungry — eat a light snack before to avoid overeating. Sarafa Bazaar (night market) survival guide: Share dishes with friends. Choose chaats over fried items. One sweet item maximum. Walk after — Sarafa is in a walkable area. Home cooking advantage: Indore households cook beautifully at home. My clients leverage this — prioritise home meals, treat street food as occasional enjoyment not daily habit.

Indore's Fitness Revolution

Something powerful is happening in Indore: the city has an incredible fitness culture growing alongside its food culture. Gyms, yoga studios, and running groups are booming. IIM Indore and DAVV students are increasingly health-aware. The missing piece is nutritional guidance matched to Indore's specific food environment.
