Pune's Young Professional Health Crisis
Pune is India's education and IT capital — home to hundreds of colleges, tech parks in Hinjewadi and Kharadi, and hundreds of thousands of young professionals aged 20-35.
It is also a city where I see some of the most diet-related health issues in young people — PCOS in 20-year-olds, pre-diabetes at 28, severe obesity by 32.
The reason? Hostel and PG food. Zomato addiction. Zero cooking skills. Irregular sleep from night shifts. And the belief that "I am young, I can fix it later."
The Pune Young Professional Diet Problem
PG and Hostel Food: Nutritionally poor, high in refined carbohydrates, low in protein and vegetables. Students and young professionals in PGs often eat whatever is available and affordable.
Zomato/Swiggy Dependence: Pune has among the highest food delivery usage in India. The average young professional in Koregaon Park, Viman Nagar, or Hinjewadi orders food 15-20 times per month. Mostly: biryani, pizza, Chinese, rolls.
Night Shift Diet: Pune's IT companies often run night shifts. Night shift workers' circadian rhythms are disrupted, leading to: insulin resistance, weight gain, thyroid disruption, and mood disorders — all worsened by poor food choices at 2 AM.
Alcohol and Social Eating: Pune's pub culture and the social eating habits of young professionals make weekend caloric intake extremely high.
Common Health Issues in Pune Clients
PCOS in Young Women: Female software engineers and college students — I see 20-24 year olds with PCOS that could have been prevented with better early diet guidance.
Weight Gain in First Job: Many Pune clients contact me after gaining 8-15 kg in their first 2-3 years of working. Sedentary job + canteen food + stress eating.
Poor Gut Health: IBS, bloating, and constipation are very common among Pune's young population due to low fibre, high processed food intake.
Pre-Diabetes at Young Ages: I have seen pre-diabetes in Pune clients as young as 26-27 — directly linked to the delivery food culture and sedentary lifestyle.
Practical Pune-Specific Solutions
For PG Residents:
Ask your PG cook for one extra sabzi or dal daily
Keep ready-to-eat healthy foods in your room: roasted makhana, mixed nuts, whole wheat bread
Sunday market (Tulsi Baug area, Camp area) — buy fruits in bulk for the week
For IT Professionals:
Office cafeteria strategy: always start with salad, then protein (dal/egg), then roti
Avoid the bread-butter-jam breakfast trap in office cafeterias
Replace the 4 PM vending machine visit with mixed nuts from your desk drawer
For Night Shift Workers:
Eat your main meal BEFORE the shift starts
During night hours: light snacks only — fruits, dahi, nuts
Sleep in a completely dark room with blackout curtains (crucial for hormone balance)
Do NOT eat a heavy meal at 2-3 AM — this is when insulin resistance spikes most
