How to Avoid Bloating at Haldi, Mehendi & Sangeet: Wedding Function Eating Guide

You have followed your diet for weeks — and then wedding week arrives: late nights, heavy buffets, endless chai and hardly any sleep. Bloating is the most common complaint brides and grooms have in the photos. The good news is that a few simple rules can keep your stomach calm through every function.

The 5 golden rules for wedding week

  1. Never go to a function hungry. Eat a small protein snack (curd, paneer cubes, boiled egg, roasted chana) before leaving.
  2. Cut salt and packaged snacks for the 3–4 days before the wedding.
  3. Keep sipping water — a bottle in your bag; coconut water between functions.
  4. Don't try anything new — no new detox drinks, supplements or exotic food.
  5. Sleep whenever you can — poor sleep slows digestion.

Function-by-function guide

Haldi (usually daytime)

Have a proper breakfast — poha, upma or chilla with curd. During the function, choose fruits, dhokla or idli over pakodas and samosas.

Mehendi (long sitting hours)

Brides sit for hours with hands busy. Keep easy-to-eat options ready: fruit pieces, sandwiches, coconut water with a straw, buttermilk. Avoid fizzy drinks that cause gas.

Sangeet (evening + dancing)

Eat a light, early dinner at home — dal-rice or khichdi with curd — so you are not starving at the buffet. At the party, pick tandoori starters, paneer tikka and salads; go easy on creamy gravies and fried snacks.

Wedding day

  • Breakfast: something you eat every day and digest well.
  • Lunch: light — curd rice, khichdi, dal-roti with a simple sabzi.
  • Keep a small snack and water with you; long rituals on an empty stomach cause acidity and dizziness.

Foods that commonly cause bloating

  • Rajma, chhole and heavy dals at dinner (fine earlier in the day)
  • Carbonated drinks
  • Raw onion and cabbage in large amounts
  • Very salty, fried snacks
  • Too much tea/coffee on an empty stomach

Simple kitchen helpers

Many people find ajwain-jeera water, saunf after meals, buttermilk with roasted jeera, or ginger-lemon water helpful. If you have IBS or frequent acidity, plan these with your dietitian — see our IBS diet plan.
